Brief History of the Whitman Theatre

When we arrived at Whitman in fall of 1957, the Whitman theatre was a barracks from the old McCaw military hospital relocated to the Whitman campus.

On March 13, 1958 a fire of undetermined origin gutted the Whitman theatre, delaying the opening of “Guys and Dolls” until late May.

Construction on the Whitman Theatre began in 1958 (cost: $141,000). The “first official season in a building with a roof” was 1959, according to HJT Director Nancy Simon ’63.

The Board of Trustees changed the name of the Whitman Theatre to Harper Joy Theatre in 1967 to honor longtime trustee Harper Joy ’22 for his outstanding service to the college.

A celebration of 50 years of Harper Joy Theatre took place in April 2010.

There were 4 Drama majors in the class of 1961: Beverly Bixby, David Coxwell, Margaret Keiter, and Rod Price.
